I've only seen some pictures of Tomar so far but I absolutely want to visit one day. The small town looks very charming. While googling we came across a hotel project by Aurora Arquitectos. It's still not done yet but we've received some amazing first pictures and visualizations that promis a lot and we'll visit for sure as soon as it will be finish.
About the project Hotel in Tomar (text by Aurora Arquitectos)
On the threshold of the historic centre of Tomar, next to Nabão river, there is an old 19 th century manor house. It hasn’t been inhabited for a long time. Its grandeur from the past can still be found, despite evident signs of decay. The plan is to transform this space into a high-end hotel unit. The challenge is keeping the house’s spatial logic and its architectural features, introducing the complex network of infrastructures and equipment, as well as the necessary changes to the space, to fit into the specific standards of this kind of function.
Minor operations to make a major operation
In a controlled manner, the existing building is manipulated using materials and building techniques well known to the context. Some spaces are reconfigured, decreasing or increasing, according to its function. By opposition, the roof and the space under it, are reinvented with a clearer design. New windows, in the corner rooms, are opened towards the city, strategically framing natural and historical points of interest. The reception and social spaces occupy the ground floor. Also, at ground floor level, there is one part of the spa facilities, that stretches out to the garden along with the pool. The room areas are in the first floor and at roof level.
There is a new separate pavilion, restaurant and bar in the garden, that works as a pivot between city and hotel. The roof arches relate to the old aqueducts, typical architectural elements of the city heritage. This roof is also designed to serve as the great balcony from which to watch the parade of the ‘Festa dos Tabuleiros’, a traditional city celebration.

About Aurora Arquitectos (text by Aurora Arquitectos)
Founded in 2010 by Sofia Couto and Sérgio Antunes, the studio Aurora Arquitectos was the natural consequence of the work developed in the previous years. The journey began during the academic period, growing stronger with the professional experience with the Kaputt! collective. Currently with a team broadened to other elements, the studio works on projects of a variety of scales, from small houses to multi-family residential buildings, as well as cultural facilities. Recently, the most developed theme is urban regeneration, which is the focus of the studio’s specialization and research. In its approach, it is particularly important the reaction to the site, what to do with the existing construction’s space and elements (sometimes, centuries old). The challenge is, therefore, to interpret, scrutinize, copy, distort and even ironize those raw materials, giving them back to the site in a new and unexpecting way. Each case is overseen in an attentive and custom way, as to look for a distinct solution, that makes each project a singular experience. Considering the unravelled limitations (legal, budget, design brief or construction site constraints), the efforts go into unfolding the project’s key moments, the same moments that result into the built space, providing meaning to all the rest.
