Arkhe

Plant based cuisine

When we booked at Arkhe, we did not really know what to expect. We actually don't eat that much meat and at home we cook a lot of vegetarian. Specially Mike was a bit skeptical about the "plant based thing". Well, we were both very positively surprised and amazed by the creations of the chef João Ricardo Alves.

João Ricardo Alves is a chef who combines passion, technique, study and creativity with a strong environmental awareness. With a background in classical French cuisine, his professional career includes countries such as Switzerland, France and England, where he has the privilege of working in the only vegetarian restaurants of the Michelin Guide Europe: Terre a Terre (Bib Gourmand) and Joia (1 star) in Milan. His experience reflects on his food creations at Arkhe. They are equally a unique experience for the eye and mouth.

After a period of travel through Asia, he ends up becoming head chef of the Hotel Fivelements in Bali, one of the pioneers of high vegetarian and vegan cuisine. In 2017 João Ricardo Alves heads to Lisbon in search of his old family ties and during his stay begins a project of plant-based pop-up dinners that give rise to Arkhe Restaurant.

Arkhe restaurant (from ancient Greek the beginning, origin) is a place dedicated to plant based cuisine, respecting the seasons, the seasonality of the ingredients and the contact with small producers in search of the best ingredients. The interior is minimal and reduced to the basics. Earthy tones emphasize the restaurants philosophy and concept.

If you want a break from Portuguese food, are vegetarian/vegan or simply want to experience something new, we recommend to spend an evening at Arkhe. Even the rosé and white wine, we had, were delicious and special in their taste.
